Program Description

The Academic Readiness Program at Eastern Kentucky University helps students achieve academic success by developing or enhancing basic skill proficiencies in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Proficiencies in these areas are measured by student performance on the ACT, SAT, and EKU placement tests. In addition, students may earn developmental proficiency in English composition, reading, or mathematics via KYOTE (KentuckY Online TEsting) scores earned in a University-sponsored High School Transition Course completed at a secondary institution.  Students needing additional preparation, as identified through testing, are required to enroll in college readiness coursework.  College readiness is defined by minimum ACT subscores of 18 in English, 19 in mathematics, and 20 in reading, and is based on the Kentucky System-Wide Standards of Assessment and Placement (http://www.lrc.ky.gov/kar/013/002/020.htm).

Academic Readiness Course Descriptions  (top)

Academic readiness courses in the areas of writing, reading, and mathematics are designed to improve essential skills in these areas. These courses will have additional academic support, such as additional labs, tutoring, and increased monitoring of students beyond that which is usually associated with an entry-level course. The Departments of English & Theatre and Mathematics & Statistics offer these courses, which include:  ENG 101R (Reading, Writing and Rhetoric, Supported), ENG 102R (Research, Writing and Rhetoric, Supported), ENG 100 (English for for Non-Native Speakers), ENR 115 (Learning Dynamics, taught only in the Colonels Now program), MAT 112AP/BP (College Algebra, Supported), MAT 105P (Math with Applications, with labs, Supported), STA 215P (Statistical Reasoning, Supported), PHI 101R (Logic and Critical Reasoning, Supported).
